A Green Crab’s Shell by Mark Doty

Not, exactly, green:
closer to bronze
preserved in kind brine,

something retrieved
from a Greco-Roman wreck,
patinated and oddly

muscular. We cannot
know what his fantastic
legs were like—

though evidence
suggests eight
complexly folded

scuttling works
of armament, crowned
by the foreclaws'

gesture of menace
and power. A gull's
gobbled the center,

leaving this chamber
—size of a demitasse—
open to reveal

a shocking, Giotto blue.
Though it smells
of seaweed and ruin,

this little traveling case
comes with such lavish lining!
Imagine breathing

surrounded by
the brilliant rinse
of summer's firmament.

What color is
the underside of skin?
Not so bad, to die,

if we could be opened
into this—
if the smallest chambers

of ourselves,
similarly,
revealed some sky.

My Shell – by Rita Basuray

    That’s easy!

My shell is invisible but tough. I only let a few people in, though my shell allows me to look out, to see and listen. Really listen. And as I hear you all, I learn to interpret so much in so very many new ways!

Thanks to you, my shell is allowing me to let more people in. Thank you! Thank you!

  2. About my shell~~~

This shell that surrounds and protects me…my spirit, my thoughts, my soul…is an azure blue, the color of the sky on a perfect fall morning.
It has dents and cracks in its surface that have been earned by encounters with the world around me.
Disappointment, failures, loss, and regrets..all take their toll upon my shell.

But here, standing in the brilliant golden rays of sunlight,
    my shell is revitalized, re-energized.
And so, I hope my shell will continue to endure what befalls me…I have much yet to do.

  3. my shell is made from abalone
    abalone and pearl
    iridescent in the light
    glowing in the night
    beneath it lies
    tough and tender
    flesh of days
    both won and lost
    and wandering vessels
    of red and blue
    which through
    course
    my love for you.

Sorry I had to leave so abruptly…had a 7 pm Zoom. So many beautiful, thoughtful comments posted here.

    If I Swallow the Sky

    If I swallow the sky,
Where within my body will it take up residence?
Sky, air, intangible, invisible, so necessary to life
Might possibly be able to find
    The small open places
    In the armor I wear
To stay alive in a violent world.
    If I swallow the sky,
Where within my body will it take up residence?
