Where I stand (by Rita Basuray)

I stand in the middle, ready to “tick”, to “tock” to two extremes – to the right or left, but come back again and again, to the middle.

Sometimes, I move left, then a bit more, to see if those viewing me, expect me to pivot or make a U-turn – or not. Their reaction to my action, inaction or reaction makes me smile.

Then, I move again. But, in which direction this time?

(Hmm, I also go up and down, and in angles, and in a spiral – forgot to tell you… )

Rita, I loved when you read this in class and I enjoyed it in written form too. Because of all the twists and turns I felt like it was a longer poem. So interesting to both hear it and see it in writing. Either way, it put a smile on my face.

Thanks so much for your kind inspiration. Narrative Medicine can be serious and heavy. I think my natural response is to revolt and lighten the mood. That’s where my mind goes first. I would like to day – loved your thoughtful write up about listening. Thanks for adding this beautiful message to my day, Rita

Rita, I totally get about lightening the mood. The gift of this forum is that we can go in any direction we want to or need to go. Sometimes I just spill out a thought and it gets it off my chest. Other times it clarifies things for me. So many times I read other people’s works and say to myself-yes I get it. And occasionally I go to the humor place as well-It really lightens the load.

  2. About where I stand~~~

I stand here within this noisy, divisive world that surrounds me.
I wonder how did we get to this point in time where find no commonality among us.
Everything must be black or white… no blending of the two.
All are pointed, jagged lines that are colliding.

So I must not remain where I stand, I must move to the open spaces… the blue skies above, the tall towering pines, the singing songbirds.
It is here I find peace and understanding.
It is here I rediscover my spirit

Sometimes I stand on my soapbox
And pontificate about some thing that charges inside me.
    I have come to realize,
    That most of the time,
    I need to dismount,
    And just listen.
