The Universe: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
BY TRACY K. SMITH

The first track still almost swings. High hat and snare, even
A few bars of sax the stratosphere will singe-out soon enough.

Synthesized strings. Then something like cellophane
Breaking in as if snagged to a shoe. Crinkle and drag. White noise,

Black noise. What must be voices bob up, then drop, like metal shavings
In molasses. So much for us. So much for the flags we bored

Into planets dry as chalk, for the tin cans we filled with fire
And rode like cowboys into all we tried to tame. Listen:

The dark we've only ever imagined now audible, thrumming,
Marbled with static like gristly meat. A chorus of engines churns.

Silence taunts: a dare. Everything that disappears
Disappears as if returning somewhere.

  1. About my soundtrack~~~

I wake up to the soothing sounds of Nature, gently urging me to arise and begin the day.
Wind rustling tree branches, still barren of greenery.
Returning visitors, robin red-breasts, chirping their melodious songs, announcing new beginnings.
Rhythmic beating of my heart, the continuity of life, unpretentious in its existence.

Off in the distance, I hear the clamor of machines, ripping apart the earth in the name of progress,
disturbing the silence, disturbing the calmness.
What becomes of Creation’s inhabitants, thrust out of normalcy, uprooted?

So, I close off the irrelevant sounds and listen to the beat echoing within me,
Sounds of familiarity, of security which bring warmth to my spirit.
This beat grows stronger, pushing me forward, pushing me within.
    Safe haven.

  2. Hi Michele – I like how the first and last lines both echo and encapulate the action of Nature being dug up. “Soothing sounds…safe haven.” And the turning inward as the last safe haven perhaps. It reminds me of the old John Mayall song “Nature’s Disppearing.” Thanks! Tony
