When Giving Is All We Have by Alberto Ríos (1952)

                                     One river gives
                                     Its journey to the next.

We give because someone gave to us.
We give because nobody gave to us.

We give because giving has changed us.
We give because giving could have changed us.

We have been better for it,
We have been wounded by it—

Giving has many faces: It is loud and quiet,
Big, though small, diamond in wood-nails.

Its story is old, the plot worn and the pages too,
But we read this book, anyway, over and again:

Giving is, first and every time, hand to hand,
Mine to yours, yours to mine.

You gave me blue and I gave you yellow.
Together we are simple green. You gave me

What you did not have, and I gave you
What I had to give—together, we made

 Something greater from the difference.

    You gave me…

    You gave me love
    but also fear
    You gave me smiles
    but also tears
    You gave me comprehension
    but also fear
    You gave me hugs
    but also tears

I gave you love… but also tears

What can I give you now?

  3. You gave me~~~

You gave me courage to face the crooked path that lies before me.

You gave me inspiration to live a life well spent.

You gave me a deeper faith,
    to believe in the impossible,
    for it becomes possible.

You gave me serenity, to be accepting of what is given me
and the value contained within it.

You gave me the vision to see beyond myself,
to the vast world waiting to be explored.

You gave me this moment in my life,
a moment that would never had happened without your presence.

What do I have to give to you…
my thanks and gratitude for the sharing of your wisdom.
    You changed my life.

    You gave me

You gave me hope when there was none.
You did not ask if I needed or even wanted it.
I had stopped waiting, expecting, imagining…
Dreams were for someone else, ephemeral like a mist.
I could not hold them, dreams, that is.
So you sent it, hope that is, floating slowing down a stream of consciousness
and I accepted your gift with gratitude.

You gave me stress; you taught me how to worry, worry all the time
You gave me a reason to learn to escape, to fall in love with running, traveling
You gave me fear of doing things like cooking, raking leaves; I fail at every time, so why waste my time.; except then I fail at what I should be doing
You gave me fear of sharing, fear of giving from the heart, fear of coming, fear of going
You gave me the reason to need to search for my true self, the reason to work hard, the reason to value what I have
You gave me the strength to be different
But, you didn’t give me – me.
