What the Living Do by Marie Howe

Johnny, the kitchen sink has been clogged for days, some utensil probably fell down there.
And the Drano won’t work but smells dangerous, and the crusty dishes have piled up

waiting for the plumber I still haven’t called. This is the everyday we spoke of.
It’s winter again: the sky’s a deep, headstrong blue, and the sunlight pours through

the open living-room windows because the heat’s on too high in here and I can’t turn it off.
For weeks now, driving, or dropping a bag of groceries in the street, the bag breaking,

I’ve been thinking: This is what the living do. And yesterday, hurrying along those
wobbly bricks in the Cambridge sidewalk, spilling my coffee down my wrist and sleeve,

I thought it again, and again later, when buying a hairbrush: This is it.
Parking. Slamming the car door shut in the cold. What you called that yearning.

What you finally gave up. We want the spring to come and the winter to pass. We want
whoever to call or not call, a letter, a kiss—we want more and more and then more of it.

But there are moments, walking, when I catch a glimpse of myself in the window glass,
say, the window of the corner video store, and I'm gripped by a cherishing so deep

for my own blowing hair, chapped face, and unbuttoned coat that I’m speechless:
I am living. I remember you.

    What the living do

What the living do depends on their idea of living. Some slog through life. Others stay busy and define themselves through their work. Still others, living is procreating and living through the next generation.

We are all products of our past and present, hoping for a memorable future that would justify our lives. Or maybe not.

Rita, we are such unique individuals with such diverse interests and goals. If it makes you happy and doesn’t hurt anyone else in the process, that’s the way it should be..some like their coffee black, others douse it with cream and sugar… go figure!

Rita, your speaker takes us through the spectrum of life, from generation to generation and also recognized the composite that our biographies are. The progress of time is certain, but other things about life are not. Perhaps that maybe is what offers us choices. Thank you. Andre

We laugh. We cry. We run out of breath after two flights of stairs that we used to race up with ease. We are confounded by technology but it’s not our fault–we’re not digital natives. We don’t finish books that we haven’t fallen in love with. Life is too short to read anything less. We put butter AND sour cream on our baked potato, get a double scoop of cherries jubilee. We hug tighter and listen longer. If not now, when?

    About what the living do…

    You’ll never retire from this

    what the living do

    it’s been your center

    the fiber of your goodness

    your purpose

being present in as many moments

    as you possibly can

    for others

    in the life of others

    bringing Light

    through your kindness, encouragement,

the sparkle in your eyes, your smile

    cherishing so deeply

all who enter into your life.

You live not to be remembered

but to know and be know.

    About what the living do~~~

It’s dark at times, missing is your glowing presencethat lit up the corners of my life.

You are the generous part of my heart, but at times you seem so far away…hidden by layers of life passing byand all the inconsequential acts that get mefrom one day to the next.

And so, I go about my day, doing the ordinary tasks of life, those you did without complaint.

Every once in a while, I pauseand my heart skips a beat. There you are, your presence stands beside meand I hear your words of wisdom.

I go on plodding through the mundane schedule of lifewhich helps occupy the mind, but my heart reminds me of the piece that is missing.

And the moon stands between the sun and me,blocking out the warmth and light, then moves on.

So must the living move on,but I hold on tightly to your memory in my heart. It is the light that helps me find my way.

    What the Living Do

The living go about their hum-drum days

    They pay their taxes

    They clean their homes

    They go to work

    But also

The living love and grieve deeply

They are awed by the beauty of nature

They celebrate the opportunity to be a part of a community

    They cherish life itself
