Angel From Montgomery” by John Prine

I am an old woman
Named after my mother
My old man is another
Child who’s grown old

If dreams were lightning
And thunder were desire
This old house would’ve burned down
A long time ago

Make me an angel
That flies from Montgomery
Make me a poster
Of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing
That I can hold on to
To believe in this livin’
Is just a hard way to go

When I was a young girl
Well, I had me a cowboy
He weren’t much to look at
Just a free ramblin’ man

But that was a long time
And no matter how I tried
The years just flowed by
Like a broken down dam

Make me an angel
That flies from Montgomery
Make me a poster
Of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing
That I can hold on to
To believe in this livin’
Is just a hard way to go

There’s flies in the kitchen
I can hear ’em there buzzin’
And I ain’t done nothing
Since I woke up today

How the hell can a person
Go to work in the morning
Then come home in the evening
And have nothing to say?

Make me an angel
That flies from Montgomery
Make me a poster
Of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing
That I can hold on to
To believe in this livin’
Is just a hard way to go

To believe in this livin’
Is just a hard way to go

Write About One Thing I Can Hold On To:

    Memories of good times.
    Accomplishments.
Those whose lives I have touched.
    Hopes for a better tomorrow.
Dreams of meeting my future grandchildren.

  2. About what I can hang on to~~~

The world is spinning so fast on its axis
People, events… flying by at break-neck speed
This day is different from yesterday, but still the same
This hour is different from the previous, but still the same

Life keeps slipping away at break-neck speed… careening and swerving… making me catch my breath
What do I hold on to… to keep myself from spinning out of control… to flying over the edge?
Hope, faith, love… these are my anchors to keep me safe and sound on this trip called life

I can hold onto the hope of
    a new day coming
“Go to bed, mom would say, tomorrow
    will be a better day”
And morning is a saving grace for
    a night on call because
things often were better in the morning and
    those bearing relief would arrive
    But there are other things
like gratitude for the breath of night
that brought me to the new day
And hope to spend my day
    full of love
    embracing being changed and
the courage to do what I am here to do.

    • We are each an author writing a new chapter in our book of life with each new sunrise we witness, replenished by night’s sleep when our mind and body are at rest… except when they are not. Each new day gives us a chance to make changes, improvements, and give thanks. To also realize that we are not, in actuality, the pilot of our life but rather the co-pilot, standing ready to hush the noises of the outside world and listen attentively to what’s being spoken to us. This requires patience, slowing down, and a willingness to surrender, which for many including myself, is a difficult task.
