"Happiness" by Jane Kenyon

There’s just no accounting for happiness,
or the way it turns up like a prodigal
who comes back to the dust at your feet
having squandered a fortune far away.

And how can you not forgive?
You make a feast in honor of what
was lost, and take from its place the finest
garment, which you saved for an occasion
you could not imagine, and you weep night and day
to know that you were not abandoned,
that happiness saved its most extreme form
for you alone.

No, happiness is the uncle you never
knew about, who flies a single-engine plane
onto the grassy landing strip, hitchhikes
into town, and inquires at every door
until he finds you asleep midafternoon
as you so often are during the unmerciful
hours of your despair.

It comes to the monk in his cell.
It comes to the woman sweeping the street
with a birch broom, to the child
whose mother has passed out from drink.
It comes to the lover, to the dog chewing
a sock, to the pusher, to the basketmaker,
and to the clerk stacking cans of carrots
in the night.
It even comes to the boulder
in the perpetual shade of pine barrens,
to rain falling on the open sea,
to the wineglass, weary of holding wine.

You know it when you feel it.
    You can describe it,
    But better yet …
    Let each person
    Sit with his/her own version
And offer no words to explain.

  2. About happiness~~~

A warm sensation spreading through the synapses of my mind, a sense of satisfaction, a fullness of the heart…” my cup runneth over”.
A feeling of “all is right with the world” but more importantly, I am right with the world.
A glimpse of my newborn granddaughter, her skin so tender, her heart so pure.
My elderly pug with her big brown eyes looking up into my eyes as if to say ” I missed you and I’m so glad you’re back”.

Finding happiness may be a struggle for some.
It requires a certain mindset… a willingness to understand, to forgive, to move on.
It is not resignation to the status quo, but rather a choice to find a measure of goodness in what was, what is, and what will be.
And it’s free for the taking.

  3. Like first light
    Stealing behind blinds
    To touch you and say
    It’s okay
    To begin, again
    That despite darkness
    No perhaps because of darkness
    There is light
    Light which never goes out
    Without
    But also within.

  4. Write About Happiness

    Laughing with abandon
    The sun washing over me.
    Worries not permitted to intrude.
Enjoying the moment and appreciating what I have
    Seeing the good
    Being with a good friend
Knowing that I have been of service
    Feeling valued and loved.
