For this session we took a close look at the image “Desert Spirits” by Spencer Tunick, posted below. 

Our prompt was: “Write about being part of a group.”

    In the zoomosphere
    Where we can’t touch physically
    But we can touch with our words
    It’s a shared space
    For minds and hearts

    Write about being a part of a group

    when a group is joined there is a sort of
    “Dis- ease”.
    unease might be a better word.
    in one sense you are anonymous
    in another you are exposed
    they wonder are they one of us
    the one to be initiated wonders where they will fit in
    they sit still, motionless
    hoping to be hidden
    never in the front row
    where no human figure can shroud them
    too naked there
    they might be better off alone
    or dropped into a landscape that is alive
    where there are more spaces to hide or be unnoticed
    what is the common purpose of landscape
    to provide a space to emerge and open up
    to still – be quiet and receive time
    or a space where one can hide.

      To be included in the membership is usually a comforting emotion, you can be hidden, and you can fade into the wallpaper if that should be your choice. But to search for the open spaces, where one can inhale deeply and exhale slowly the conflicting thoughts of existence in this world is a most freeing experience… even if it is of short duration.

    About being part of a group~~~

    I am one entity within the group.
    A collection of beating hearts and warm bodies.
    Hidden within is our uniqueness, that which lies within the mind and spirit.
    There is protection provided by my co-members,
    but I seek individuality.
    For in the exploring, there are truths to be discovered rather than settling for the status quo.
    To march to the beat of a common drum encourages redundancy and repels discovery.
    I long for the fringes, the edges.. they lure me forward.

      The themes that touch me here are beating hearts, exploration, discovery and lure. I also appreciated the edges and fringes of the image we examined, and I found myself back there. Andre

    Write About Being Part of a Group

    Being a group member can comforting.

    It is nice to feel like I belong.

    I am among those who understand me and share my experience.

    The entire group gets credit when only one or two people do all the work

    The group gets blamed even if only one or two people did wrong.

    In a group I am not special. I do not stand out.
