the bullet was a girl by Danez Smith

the bullet is his whole life.
his mother named him & the bullet

was on its way. in another life
the bullet was a girl & his skin

was a boy with a sad laugh.
they say he asked for it—

must I define they? they are not
monsters, or hooded or hands black

with cross smoke.
they teachers, they pay tithes

they like rap, they police—good folks
gather around a boy’s body

to take a picture, share a prayer.
oh da horror, oh what a shame

why’d he do that to himself?
they really should stop
getting themselves killed

  1. In another life~~~
I would have been bolder right from the very start.
I’d stop biting my tongue…all that gets me is a bloody mouth.
I would speak my peace to make peace, to champion those who have no voice.

In another life, I would have been born rich,
enough money to make sure no child ever goes to bed hungry,
and that they have a bed to lay their heads down upon,
not the backseat of a car or worse yet.

In another life, I would possess a magic wand.
One that I could wave about and there would be no wars or injustices,
that when waved, all those in government would truly be servants of the people instead of furthering their own agendas.

In another life, I would have foreseen my destiny,
    my true calling and purpose.
So much time wasted finding myself, knowing myself,
or maybe not…half the fun is in the discovery.

In another life, there would always be time to appreciate life,
to find always the joy in life,
no matter what obstacles are strewn before me.

In another life, I would want another life.
That’s just the way it is.
