For this session we read a poem“Redeem” by Rosalie Moffett, posted below.

Our prompt was: Write about a redemption center.

Participants are warmly encouraged to share what you wrote below (“Leave a Reply”), to keep the conversation going here, bearing in mind that the blog of course is a public space where confidentiality is not assured.

Also, we would love to learn more about your experience of these sessions, so if you’re able, please take the time to fill out a follow-up survey of one to two quick questions!

Please join us for our next session Monday July 30th at 6pm EDT, with more times listed on our Live Virtual Group Sessions.

Redeem by Rosalie Moffett
The sun was losing
a long gold tooth

on the linoleum
of the labor and delivery ward.

I lifted my plastic bracelet to the green eye
of the barcode gun and it sang

the first note
of money’s national anthem.

Redeem, a word with its feet
in the cement block

of bribe, of buy. Each Tylenol,
a tiny egg in the nest

of the nurse’s cupped hand,
rematerialized weeks later

on the itemized bill. Nearby, a sign
on the fine diamond storefront:

GOING OUT OF SIN !

Redemption, a mercy

of wind, of one idea
asleep in another.

I had been the nation
you lived in. Like a shore

in lapping water,
you made your borders

expand a little
with each breath.

    We’re all just a subtotal on a long list of receipts;
Generational debt counted through our family lines defeat
Against all odds, we beseech the throne to redeem our names attached to wealth betrothed
Stolen are they, our freedoms, our pride
    And joys future to sustain
A nations greed from the filthy game they play
I say no more, to the sickness and disease, the needles and pills they feed us against our feeble will
A new age is upon us, a new age has dawned
The only questions left to ask is will you be silent? Will you be still?

And that is a critical question, indeed! Its answer determines whether we will move into the light or remain in the darkness.

After reading the work, we are left to ponder the end’s important questions. The buildup of the piece’s ideas leads to this.

I am back in the poem with the barcode gun and the itemized bill. Silence is not an option. We must do more than lap at the lake shore. We must not be silent and we must act.

      Thank you.

    About a redemption center~~~

Where do I go to seek redemption…
to seek healing salves for a spirit
    that has been battered about?

This world has drained the breath out of me,
    with its anger and hatred.
It seems many have become complacent,
willing to accept the status quo…
but I, for one, do not.

I cannot balance good against evil,
where the misunderstood are cast aside,
    where the poor are forgotten,
and where the children become collateral damage.

So, where do I go to find redemption?
    I go to Nature…
to hear the bluebird’s joyous song,
    to see wild violets blooming,
and to listen to the whispering pines.

In these moments, I find my peace,
    I find my redemption.

The writer is seeking redemption and then offers where she has found it. It is unique to her, but could be used by many. She brings us into that space with her words.

The colors, the songs, the feel of the breeze wending through the pine trees – reliable sources of solace and comfort, placed in our midst by a reliable, constant God. You’ve told us this before. Those in control want us to adopt a position of helplessness which we must not do. We must retreat to our places of solace and participate in the redemption. Andre

Yes, the world gets too noisy at times… too much confrontation and the gnarling of tempers. So I go off to Nature, a gift from my Creator, to calm my mind and soothe my spirit. It works every time.

    REDEMPTION BUSINESS

Take your bottles to the center,

    Redemption for cash.

Take your coupons to the store,

    Redemption for goods.

Take your self to the house of worship,

    Redemption for your soul.

    A Redemption Center

I sit in the  quiet dim light of the chapel

    Looking at you

    While you look gaze back

    From your golden sunburst

With eyes of mercy and the gaze of contemplation

    Upon your creation

    Willed into being

    Loved into being.

In quiet contemplation I feel my breath

Warmly move in and out of my lungs.

    My muscles melt into relaxation

    Barely able to move,

And I am in awe of all that happens

In each moment to keep me alive.

    Nothing matters except

There is nothing I must do to make you love me more.

His love for me is limitless, and His forgiveness is never exhausted. I am never alone because He stands beside me.

As you said, He does this without ever asking anything in return. We are imperfect creatures, yet He still loves us and never abandons us. That’s pretty amazing.
