  1. Prompt: write about seeing without understanding.I watch from across the roomSee the smiling facesThe casual banterThe elbow jabs and the smirksThe food comes outAnd each enjoys their partSome ask for moreOthers fill up quicklyTheir drinks are filled and refilledThey barely look up from the mealOr their phonesTo see me wondering if they ever miss meHow can they not miss me

I enjoyed the similarity of style to today’s piece. You’re right… watching people at a restaurant is sometimes more enjoyable than the plate set before us.

    Seeing Without Understanding

Sometimes when I go to a modern art museum. I struggle to understand what makes some of the pieces art. Why is a blank piece of paper with a single dot considered art? Wouldn’t I be able to make a Jackson Pollack piece myself? It looks like fun. Why are these works actually hanging in a museum? What is the artist trying to say? Why don’t I get it? What is wrong with me?

When I take the time to just look at the artwork without trying to understand it, I can see the variations in the paint strokes, the use of color the placement of a stripe on the canvas and then I can accept that I do not always need to understand.

From today’s writing prompt – Seeing without understanding:

“What was he looking at? The movement happened so suddenly he wasn’t sure what he was seeing, and he certainly didn’t understand it. They had been driving in the car, he and his grandfather. Then they’d pulled off to the side of the road near a gas station. His grandfather gave him a piece of candy and told him to stay in the car. Grandpa then walked over to the gas station. A group of men were standing there, a couple of attendants and some customers. When the old man reached them, he collapsed and fell to the ground. The men quickly rushed to him. It would be many years before the child understood what he had seen.”

    About seeing without understanding~~~

Blurs of color surround me: black, white, yellow, brown.
A kaleidoscope of pigments blends into one.
Isn’t that how it’s supposed to be…acceptance and incorporation?

    Yet, I find myself confused.
    Borders are drawn around us.
“You look different, you sound different; you must go.”

You become the black, ugly duckling among a collection of pretty ducklings,
all neatly lined up in a row

Somehow, I can’t make sense of this,
and my Creator questions it also.

So, I remain puzzled and blurry-eyed,
wanting to keep my eyes closed
but knowing I must keep them wide open.
