Blue Velvet by Eileen Chong

I bought her those shoes. I was the only one
who ever bought her shoes. I knew her
size. I knew what she liked. She’d always
picked on me, but I was the only one
who ever bought her shoes
in her size that she liked.

She had told her oldest son
that when death called
for her, she wanted to be wearing
those shoes. He said
they were house slippers, too flimsy
for her walk in the other world.

Yet in the end, afraid, he gave me
the shoes – hand-embroidered
with phoenixes decked out
in sequins, gold thread, green
beads for eyes – I sheathed
the old lady’s cold, rigid feet.

Thank god I had bought them
in blue, not red. She would not
have been allowed to be buried
in anything red. Not unless we wanted her
to come back from the dead, shuffling
in those slippers, going to the courtyard
to beat the night’s blankets
in the dawning sun.

The Shoes That Walk in Another World

When I don the shoes that walk in another world

    I am walking on clouds.

They embrace every contour of my foot and

    feel like heaven.

My other worldly shoes transport me

In seconds from place to place.

They kick away misfortune and grip only

    the beautiful.

The shoes that walk in another world are

waiting for me to finish my business here

    In this world

One day I will put down my earthly shoes

And my new shoes and I  we can finally frolic together

Lisa, I hear about a pair of shoes that fit like a glove, that are so comfortable as if they aren’t there. They transport to another world. The are something worth waiting for, to anticipate free of care, with joy.

Lisa, wouldn’t it be so nice to be able to just put on a pair of shoes and have a shift in being. I will admit that actors say that’s what happens when they costume.

About shoes to walk about in another world~~~

    There’s no pondering needed,
    I think I will select ankle-high
    hiking shoes to walk about
    and survey the potential
    of what lies before me
    in the world to come.

Made of thick, rich, supple brown leather
with sturdy soles to transverse difficult terrain…
anything that life would throw at me
    to set me off course,
I will take it in stride.

    Yes, these shoes
    would be my KRYPTONITE!

My feet would be comfortably supported
so that I could climb the steepest mountains
    without a blister ever forming
    to spoil the fun.

I do not care if they aren’t stylish-looking
    or the latest fad.
Practicality is my number one concern.
Life in this world is difficult enough,
so, who knows what the next world
    will be like.

So, sandals and slippers just won’t do,
I’ll take a pair of LL Bean hiking shoes
and be on my way, thank you.

      Michele,

Our speakers seemed to have similar ideas about the shoe quality required for the reality of life., and your speaker is wise to be an LL Bean customer. I think many would agree. I hear caution in your speaker’s voice about traversing the other world. Who would not have confidence in ” thick, rich, supple brown leather with sturdy soles to transverse difficult terrain”; such beautiful language? Who would criticize anyone want to be sure and safe with such shoes.

The Last Shoe My Mother Bought

She was perched on the edge of a sage green vinyl chair, holding the shoe protectively in her lap, relieved to be sitting down and willing to wait quietlywhile other shoppers and sales clerks whirled past us.

Finally I stood and approached the two young peoplechatting behind the sales counter.“Please help me.” I whispered. Too urgently. One of them followed me and knelt before her.

The young man cupped my mother’s bent foot in his big palmclearly doubting his ability to wedge that foot, bunions, corns, callouses and all, into the sensible shoe she had chosen.

The challenge of fitting the wrong shoeson a determined 92-year old became obvious, and yet he patiently persisted, all of us understandingshe would not be able to wear them long.

This story took me right back into Emily Chong’s poem. The details of the shoe fitting are so vivid and the details remind me of how the shoes in the poem are described and the image of the matriarch is equally intriguing. I hear a sense of respect for who she is and a tolerance for her wishes late in life. Andre

What a touching and beautiful description of a scene. You brought me into it with your words. I also heard shadows of the poem.

I’ve never considered what to wear for a walk in another world.

We come into this world naked, head to toe

bathed in the warmth of our mother’s womb.

Yet as we walk through the life of this world

things cool off and we tread upon rough surfaces

    and face cold harsh realities.

So, we don shoes with steel shanks that

rise above our ankles and are insulated for warmth.

I rather think in the other world

the landscape might be softer and

    our shoe choice would include

no shoes and a choice of where to walk and not walk.

Andre, what a contrast in the shoes of this world and the next one. You contrast the harshness of this world so beautifully with the soft landing of the next one. I wish all of us with happy walking throughout.
