Our prompt was: Write about your people.

Participants are warmly encouraged to share what you wrote below (“Leave a Reply”), to keep the conversation going here, bearing in mind that the blog of course is a public space where confidentiality is not assured.

Also, we would love to learn more about your experience of these sessions, so if you’re able, please take the time to fill out a follow-up survey of one to two quick questions!

My people come from far and wide.  My nose comes from Hungary, as does my taste in cabbage which my father calls “questionable”.

My dancing spirit comes from Ireland and countless stories and shamrocks from my Nana when I was little.

My new love for farming was a recent and unexpected gift from my late grandpa – a chance for me to connect to his younger years when his family had huge gardens and beehives full of honey.  I am most thankful for that gift, which has helped me better connect with my new home in a small farm town.

Loved the traits you share with your relatives from far and wide. I especially found a connection with the one you shared about your grandpa… his love of farming. I, too, had a grandfather who was an immigrant from Italy, secured a piece of land in upstate NY and started a vegetable farm which he used to support his large family. I guess my “green” thumb which is also sometimes brown, unfortunately, came from him.

    About my people~~~

We are scattered about… miles separate us…

but within our hearts, we are

    and will be forever,

    next-door neighbors.

We share memories of our childhoods,

of leaving home to go off to school,

    of weddings, of births

    and of deaths.

    There is common ground

even though we do not stand face to face,

    looking into each other’s eyes.

My heart hurts when your heart hurts,

my heart bursts with joy at your successes.

Together there is a bond formed that no force

can sever… it is a bond formed by love and respect.

    You are forever my people…

in this world and the next.

    My People

    My people instinctively understand me.

They know what I am thinking before I speak.

My sense of humor is theirs.

They will go to bat for me and defend me even when I am wrong.

My people are forgiving and slow to anger.

Some I have know for over fifty years and some I recently met.

They are a part of me and I a part of them.

That inexplicable connection that, at times, requires no words to be spoken. This is one of the treasures in life. Thanks for sharing!
