I have witnessed the pushing of morality and decency off the cliff of the world.
A world in constant turmoil… chaotic wars being fought across our globe.
    Mother Earth, in sorrow, weeps.
Smoke, rockets, gunfire, and death poison existence.
Men, women, and children are forever gone…
forever gone are their dreams never to be realized.

I rush to a quiet place among the towering pines
and listen to the wind singing through the branches.
This gives me peace and I say a prayer that
sanity will return to hearts and minds… for it must.
To once again see the smiles
on innocent children’s faces at play…
    this is my prayer.

For this, I look to the heavens,
    awaiting an answer

I have witnessed the depth of human despair and the joy that comes more often than we care
To notice or see, that slips so easily and quickly from our gaze that we take it for granted and yet never let it in long enough to know that this moment, this grace, is all that we really need to hold on to, to live in, to live on. I have witnessed the start of life, the end of life, everyday cruelty, and everyday kindness. I have witnessed becoming, unbecoming, and the moment that they turn. I have witnessed enough and yet, not enough – slid into the closet to cut off the sound; but still here, still rising.
      Amen.

Thank you for sharing your writing. What stays with me is the thought of “faces at play” – the privilege it is to have moments to return to the simple, creative joy of play.

    I Have Witnessed
    I have witnessed supreme kindness
I have seen depravity and cruelty
    I have encountered tenderness
    I have beheld agression
I have been engulfed by a field of wildflowers
I have been surrounded by piles of debris and garbage
I have listened to eloquent words of poetry
I have heard a volley of expletives
    I have experienced love
I have felt bigotry and loathing.

What does take for people to be at their best?

    I have witnessed people
In the middle of a war
    With sons on the frontlines
    Living through shock and horror

    I am in awe
How they are able to function at regular life
And help others with their full hearts
And still find a place of gratitude
