“Song for the Turtles in the Gulf” by Linda Hogan

We had been together so very long,
you willing to swim with me
just last month, myself merely small
in the ocean of splendor and light,
the reflections and distortions of us,
and now when I see the man from British Petroleum
lift you up dead from the plastic
bin of death,
he with a smile, you burned
and covered with red-black oil, torched
and pained, all I can think is that I loved your life,
the very air you exhaled when you rose,
old great mother, the beautiful swimmer,
the mosaic growth of shell
so detailed, no part of you
simple, meaningless,
or able to be created
by any human,
only destroyed.
How can they learn
the secret importance
of your beaten heart,
the eyes of another intelligence
than ours, maybe greater,
with claws, flippers, plastron.
Forgive us for being thrown off true,
for our trespasses,
in the eddies of the water
where we first walked.

It was not a secret that I loved you
or that “we” were destined to inevitably combust
leaving parts of me and my complicated existence strewed across the landscape of my life

The important secret that no one knows
    is how through you
    I discovered in me
    places I yearned to go
    but did not yet know

    • i love this. It reminds me that those who have traveled to the outer reaches of our existence – via a rocket – and then return, what they return in combusts once it reaches our home’s atmosphere.

  2. Wonders hidden, but in open view. The loudest secret – ears listening, eyes looking, hearts rendering, lungs breathing. Do the stars get angry if we don’t hear the neighborhood kids playing, or the screen door slamming or the song of the train at night from inside the summer of your bedroom or the quiet of snow? Or if we don’t the see red- winged blackbird at the edge of the field and the pink moon? Or if we don’t feel what it is to be walking around in the miracle of our bodies?
    So, are there any secrets?
What do I hide, and why is it important?

  3. About secret importance~~~

The bias of humankind takes all forms.
Different skin colors, different ethnic backgrounds, different religions.
Hushed undertones coloring our thinking, our interactions.

What makes one living creature, be it human or otherwise, better than another?
Our Creator did not have this in mind as He labored to create the universe.

The importance of life for all God’s creatures is sacred and should be honored.
It is a holy concept that should not be kept secret but rather pronounced loud and clear for all to hear.
We are all one. We all are connected.
On this earth, our home, we must all be given an equal chance for survival.

We all have a sense that we are secretly important
    Our needs should override others
We should be given the respect and accolades that we deserve
When in reality, what makes us important
    Is our interconnectedness to others
Our bonds of being part of the human race
This is the real secret importance of life
