For this session we gathered to observe the visual art piece “Swiss Made (Edition 2)” by Vaclac Pozarek, posted below.

Our prompt for this session was: “Write about seeking balance.”

Vaclac Pozarek is a Czech-born artist who has been living and working in Switzerland since the late 1960s. The richness and diversity of his body of work is evident in the various media he chooses to work with: primarily drawing and sculpture, but also collaging, photography, scenography and exhibition design, and book design. In his visual artwork and installations, Pozarek tries to find points of contact between art and everyday objects; ceaselessly querying the ways in which art is presented to us. His graphic work underlines his fascination with typography and architecture, calling to mind building plans and architectural façade embellishments. His research combines the principles of Constructivism, concrete art, and Minimalism; creating a unique synthesis of these distinctive movements.

    Are you out of your mind?! There’s no such thing as balance. It’s an illusion, or at least an extremely precarious aspiration. I’ve given up on balance. I’m in search of rhythm. Blessed Movement – back and forth, to and fro, in and out, up and down, over and out. Like the seasons, like the sea.

    My mind once dominated my life
    until loss and love silenced it.
    Then my heart broke open
    and prevailed, for a while.
    When I learned to walk
    the tightrope between them
    a fine balance was found.

      Patricia, that a broken heart, opened, can prevail is a hopeful thought and I suspect uncommon. That one can learn to walk again after that and manage a tightrope is also a message or courage and encouragement. Andre

      Tony, I admire the speaker’s boldness. Tipping a refrigerator without disturbance seems feasible, but tipping it over can only be a messy experiment. Keeps me pondering. Andre

    About seeking balance~~~

    Left, right.
    Up, down.
    Moving constantly, pushed about, buffeted about, spinning.
    Loud noises bombarding the body, dislodging logic.
    Swaying back and forth, searching for equanimity and balance, an anchor point to hang onto.
    Is it possible when so much seems out of control?

    I close my eyes.
    In the darkness I find balance, balance that brings sanity back, that brings security back.
    In the darkness, there is peace, there is hope.

      Michele, the staccato stream of shifts in position had be off balance as this narrative opens. But in closing my eyes steadiness was restored and the speaker found peace and hope. Andre

    As the nerves in my feet, little by little, start to fail I find myself preoccupied with balance. You know that our ankles are the first joint to protect us from falling and they aren’t a foot away from our soles. Who knows how long it will be before the sensation there is no longer reliable.

    This past year of remarkable world history, of medical history, social unrest, and political drama has my head spinning wondering at what point will we come to some semblance of balance.

    Vertigo

    Halfway up the mountain,
    I’m climbing on all fours, like a bear, across steep scree.
    It’s raining.

    The mountain moves.
    I look over my shoulder
    The sky is falling, the earth is turning,
    I’m being thrown out into space.

    Flatten my body against the ground,
    Can’t move.
    Clutch the grass. Root my fingers in the earth.
    Lying still. Can’t raise my head.

    I am the fulcrum, neither up nor down.
    Helpless. Terrified.
