When I tuck the memory beneath my eyelids,

I blink away the colours until the ice burns to ash.

They said you would be in the sunsets

but the wake was more grey than anything else

the world didn’t freeze over in July,

but come December I sit at the lake and wait for the birds that stayed

    to make themselves known.

    Gloves heavy,

I plant my feet into sky

dig the blades into the ground above the ground.

The gashes in my fingers shudder at the memory of being held.

    Split open

the laces and the photograph from my pocket, your hair slicing up your smile, mid spin

I tuck it into my sleeve, skate beyond myself

and into the place where you were

strong enough to make the ice bleed

and sunflowers bloom from the scars

Jennifer, a very visceral description of the writer attempting to do whatever is within her power to reconnect with a person who has departed from this earth. I also get the impression that one of the shared activities, now lost, centered on skating on a frozen lake during December. Just my supposition..I’m probably totally off base. 🙂

Such excellent writing, Jennifer, you have a gift!

About a time when everything became clear~~~

    The stickiness of it all,
    when everything seemed
    to meld into each other
    and became indiscernible.

When there were no distinct lines of reasoning,
    when truths became falsehoods and
    falsehoods became truths,
    when up became down and
    down became up,
when skin color and country of origin
    became categories of worthiness
    rather than moral character.

When loyalty to an authoritarian figurehead
became the basis of loyalty to one’s country
rather than a belief in a constitution of laws
established for the good of its people.

I arrived at a point of realization,
    a point of clarity,
that all of that stickiness, that messiness
    isn’t relevant.

    What is important is that
I remember the words of my Creator
who said that we are all created in His likeness,
that we are all equal in His eyes.

Now I guess I have to wait for the rest of the world
    to acknowledge that philosophy
and then maybe, it will all make sense.
