Against Distance by Trey Moody

I don’t know who needs to hear this

other than me, but the moon will never leave

you, you are good enough for the moon

and the moon is good enough for you,

because you are here and the moon is there

every time the moon is supposed to be

there, and isn’t it interesting when we want

to show up for each other we say we are

counting on it and what else but numbers

teach us we are each one, and what else

but the moon teaches us we are each many,

so when you try counting  your remaining

moments with the moon, the moon

that will never, ever leave you, give up.

Even the moon inches a little more distant

every year. I’ve heard grief is only love

with nowhere to go. But then you look up.

Sometimes I don’t want to be one of many,

I want to fend for myself,

    deal with only my stuff,

and not be burdened by other people’s issues.

    Then reality sets in.

    Our interconnectedness is so powerful,

    so essential,

and while at times it is so challenging…

    we need it

and would not want it any other way.

Elizabeth, I completely understand your statement. Sometimes we have all to do to sort through our own stuff, let alone take on the problems of others. But it is in this sharing of burdens that makes us compassionate spirits, willing to give of our time and talents to help another. And somehow when we do this, our hearts are rewarded. And isn’t that one of the gifts of being human.

    About being one among many~~~

I stand here in the darkness of the night,
staring up at the stars and the moon.
Are they looking down on me,
    can they see what lies
    within my heart and mind?

    Do these celestial bodies
sense what goes on here on Earth…
a blatant distrust for those who look different,
    talk different, act different.
Do they see how we mistreat the Earth
and its creatures to the point of extinction?

I wonder about all those others
    who stand gazing,
    on this summer night,
at these same stars and moon.
    Do they search for answers,
    for courage and hope
    as I do?

    Collectively, we form a community,
    a “community of life travelers”,
    each with our own stories
    of struggle and survival.

    I sense I do not
    stand here as a solitary
    member of humankind.

    A Divine Guidance
    offers me security
that I will never have to walk
    this life path alone,
    that there is One
    who helps carry the burden.

So, as I cast my eyes
    to the heavens,
    I am at peace
and I pause to give thanks.
